Fuel Costs
Because diesel is a world commodity, through the various fuel crises of the past 35 years, the
price of Diesel has proven to be relatively stable.
In NZ, it seems to many consumers, that the electricity industry promotes expensive ways how
consumers can spend hard earned savings on gadgets and ideas to save electricity, then they
increase electricity costs, so that their cash income suffers little, even though the consumer
has commited much private cash to save energy.
In NZ, Electricity prices considerably exceeded diesel prices almost as soon as industry
deregulation was enacted many years ago, and even though diesel has also seen some dramatic
recent price increases, depending on just who is your electricity supplier and tariff, diesel
fuel (when burned efficiently) is some 25% to 40% less than Electricity.
Comparing Diesel with Electricity (heating costs)
When operating continuously (not switching on and off via the thermostat) LASERTM fuel
consumption is (litres diesel per hour).........

To compare the cost of diesel heat produced by a Laser 73 (9.5 kW OUTPUT) with electricity,
identify the cost of each "unit" of power (Kilowatt hour) of electricity that is shown on
your monthly power account - typically you will be paying between 14 cents and 25 cents per
"unit" or "kilowatt hour", depending on your Power Supplier, Location, and Power Tarriff.
Identify the cost per litre of diesel fuel - for this example we will use $1.10 per litre.
Now apply the following formula to calculate the cost of one kW hr of Diesel
(ie. to compare with 1kW hr of Electricity).
Diesel consumed x cost per litre -:- by the heat output = Cost per kilowatt hour ( Unit).
Example:
LASERTM 73 - Hi-fire, 1.08 ltrs x $1.10 (Diesel) -:- 9.5kW output = 12.50 cents per kW hr
(electricity equivalent - compare to your power account).
Remember:
a) The thermostat automatically switches the LASERTM from Hi-fire to Med-fire to Lo-fire and to OFF, which reduces consumption.
b) 9.5kW output is nearly the same as operating five 2kW electric heaters simultaneously --
if sustained at 9.5kW output, it's a huge amount of heat in any home
c) 9.5kW will heat an entire (reasonably well insulated) home of 1600sq feet (160m/2) to 2,200sq ft,
(220m/2) -- high quality heat in living areas, and "background heat" in the remainder of the home

While a LASERTM heater needs electricity, (less than a 100 watt
light bulb), converting your heating to diesel energy frees your winter heating needs from the
"merry go round" of ever increasing electricity price increases and contributes to the national
need to save electricity.
